18C: Batoni Wallpaper 2

It's been a very long time since I've posted anything! This is one of the things in a batch of portrait wallpapers I've fiddled with off and on for the past few months.

James Caulfeild, by Pompeo Batoni. Batoni is one of those painters who never gets as much credit as he deserves; he was FABULOUSLY talented, and I admire his work tremendously. His main "claim to fame" is the portrait of James Boswell that's been attributed to Batoni, but as precious few of his paintings are online, he has few admirers than (IMO) he deserves.

One word in respect to this painting: COLORS! I love how they are almost the colors of the Italian flag (Batoni was Italian), and the red contrasting cuffs and facings are just brilliant. I also love how his hands are masculine; no white, foppish hands for this gentleman! And black stock cravats = ♥
